Facial fillers (also called dermal fillers) are natural substances that are safely injected under the skin. They are effective in smoothening out deep facial lines and rejuvenating the face for many months.
Treatment with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid (HA) occurs naturally in our bodies and holds water. It is hydrating and gives volume to the skin that results in a youthful and smooth appearance. With ageing the level of natural HA in the skin structures decreases giving a deflated facial appearance.
HA Dermal Fillers are generally a safe and effective way to correct lines, wrinkles and folds shaping facial contours to restore a youthful appearance. HA Dermal Fillers are sterile gels consisting of non-animal stabilised Hyaluronic Acid (NASHA), so there is no risk of transmission of infectious diseases from animals and there is minimal risk of allergic reaction.
Since its launch in 1996 Hyaluronic Acid fillers has been used safely in over 10 million treatments worldwide. It is usually non-permanent and is usually absorbed naturally over time so it is your choice when to have further treatment to maintain the effect. The treatment consists of a series of injections. The results are usually visible immediately lasting normally between 3 to 9 months depending on the type of product used and the injection location. Fillers can be used in conjunction with Botulinum injections to achieve a longer lasting effect.
Miss Lee will discuss expectations beforehand, so that all patients have a realistic idea of what can be achieved.
Facial fillers can be used to
- Add volume to lessen the effects of ageing, especially in the cheek and chin area
- Add volume to hollowing after surgery, for example after blepharoplasty where excess fat has been removed
- Lift and smooth our superficial moderate wrinkles around the eyes
- Correct deeper lines and folds, such as forehead grooves and nose-to-mouth (nasolabial) lines
- Accentuate or restore symmetry to facial contours.
What to expect after treatment
Sometimes patients can see an immediate improvement in the treated areas on the day depending on whether there is any bruising or swelling. Depending on the area treated results may last 6 months or more. Some of the products may last up to 12-18months.
Do not rub the treated area for at least 48 hours. If the treatment has been given to the cheek areas be careful not to sleep face down.
Occasional little bumpy areas can occur and once the swelling has subsided, ssage any tiny lumps can be massaged with thumb or index finger to flatten out any unevenness.
Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat, and consumption of alcoholic beverages. This minimises the risk of temporary redness, swelling and/or itching at the treatment sites. An ice pack can usually be applied to the site if there is significant swelling.
What are the possible side effects?
Most side effects are mild or moderate and usually last less than a week.
The most common side effects include temporary injection site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discolouration.
Other rare risks can occur and detailed information will be provided before any treatment.
Who is not suitable for treatment?
Dermal Fillers should not be used in patients who have a history of severe allergies or a compromised immune system.
Before treatment all patients fill in a medical history questionnaire to determine if they are an appropriate candidate for treatment and to screen for any potential problems.
The safety of dermal fillers has not been established in breastfeeding females, during pregnancy, or in patients under the age of 18.
All treatment is preceded by a detailed consultation and examination to establish the correct diagnosis.
