| Irritable eyelids (Blepharitis) |
|
| Blepharitis is a common and chronic inflammatory condition that affects the eyelids. It cannot be cured but it can be controlled, if you follow the advice of your eyelid specialist.
|
|
| Signs and symptoms include sandy or itchy eyes and red
or swollen eyelids. Crusty, or flaky skin may appear on the eyelids.
In severe cases, this condition may also cause styes, irritation and
inflammation of the cornea and conjunctivitis. Some patients may have
no symptoms at all. |

Blepharitis cannot be cured but it can be controlled. The key is keeping
the eyelids and eyelashes clean. Hold a clean wash cloth soaked in hot
(not boiling) water against the eyelids for 5 -10 minutes. Re-soak the
flannel as it cools. Clean away any crusts present on the eyelids with
fresh cotton buds (a box can be bought from any chemist) dipped in a
cleaning solution made by dipping the tip of a clean cotton bud in to
baby shampoo, stirred and mixed evenly into half a cup of cool boiled
water. Use a cotton bud to firmly stroke the skin of the lids towards
the eyelashes along the entire length of the lid. The aim is to express
the oil from the blocked glands.
